The Herb Wheel Garden

In the 1950s, the Society raised the annual dues to $1.50 and funds to create The Herb Wheel Garden behind the 1810 House were allotted.
The garden was originally planted by Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis and Mrs. Bradner, Sr. with professional guidance from Mrs. Charles Reed and Mr. Ralph Schaeffer of Newburgh, N.Y. It remains today as a beautiful example of an 18th century inspired English herb gardens.
An excerpt from the 1957 WHS 50th Anniversary Booklet -
Back of the [1810] house a brick terrace, shaded with wisteria and grape vines, overlooks a "Wheel Garden" of herbs. A delicious spicy fragrance lingers in the air as you tread the old brick paths around the wheel, noting, if you know your herbs, sage, thyme, lavender, teucrium, clove pinks, hysson, lamb's tongue, dusty miller and those special favorites of all grandmothers, lemon verbena and rose geraniums. Miniature boxwood surrounds the outer beds of perennials, and lilacs shade the old well house and Indian grinding stone, where birds come for a cool drink. Old fashioned roses and hollyhocks grow along the picket fence in back, and a gate leads you up to the Old Meeting House on the green.
Featuring intricate patterns and a variety of fragrant flowers and plants, the garden offers a unique and picturesque setting. This Herb Wheel Garden is available to rent and perfect for photo shoots and private events.
